Privacy policy

Effective October 28, 2026

Octopuzzle is a daily puzzle app from Tinkerers Labs. This policy explains what the app keeps on your phone, what it sends to our server, and how to delete it.

What stays on your phone

  • Your settings, puzzle progress, streaks and history are saved on the phone.
  • Puzzles you have downloaded can be played offline. Results are queued and sent later in the background.
  • Your sign-in token for our server is kept in the iOS Keychain.

What we send to our server

Our server runs on DigitalOcean. To keep your streaks, stats and leaderboards working, the app sends:

  • A random player ID created when you first open the app, and a token the app uses to talk to the server. Neither is tied to your name.
  • Device details, sent on each launch: Apple's identifier for vendor (unique to our apps on your phone), iPhone model, iOS version, app version and build, phone language and region, time zone, and whether notifications are allowed.
  • Your game results: which puzzle you played, the date, whether you solved it, the number of attempts, score, time taken and hints used, plus your guesses or board and the moves you made. The server uses the moves to check that a result is genuine.
  • Your profile, only the parts you choose to set: a display name, a username, an avatar (an Inky, emoji or initials picture from a fixed set) and a country. The app suggests a username from your name and a country from your phone's region; nothing is saved until you tap Save, and you can choose not to show a country.
  • Groups and friends, if you use them: group names you create, which groups you are in, your friends and friend requests, and the emoji reactions you leave on results.
  • Sign in with Apple, only if you choose it: Apple's private user ID for this app, the name you share, and your email address only if you share it. We never ask for it.

We do not use advertising or analytics SDKs, and we do not track you across other companies' apps and websites.

What other players see

  • In a group or with a friend: your display name (or @username if you have no name), avatar, country flag, and your results, scores, streaks and reactions in that group.
  • In weekly leagues: up to 30 players at your level see your @username (never your display name), avatar, country flag and weekly points. If you have no username you appear as a generated nickname such as "Coral Inky 042".
  • Names, usernames and group names are checked against a list of offensive words, and usernames like "admin" are reserved.
  • You can report or block any player from their row in a group, your friends or your league. Reports go to Tinkerers Labs and are reviewed within 24 hours; blocking hides their name and reactions from you and stops friend requests between you.

Camera and clipboard

  • Camera: used only when you tap Scan a QR code, to read a group or friend code. The picture never leaves your phone and is not saved.
  • Clipboard: the Paste button reads the clipboard only when you tap it, to fill in an invite. On first launch the app asks iOS only whether the clipboard holds a link, without reading it, so it can offer to open an invite. It reads the link only if you tap to open it.

Players under 13

The app asks for your birth month and year once, the first time you do something that would collect personal information, such as setting a name. If you are under 13, you play without a display name, username, country or Sign in with Apple, and the server refuses them. You can still pick an avatar from the fixed set, and you appear to others as a generated nickname. Puzzles, streaks and stats work the same. We store an age band (under 13, 13 to 17, or 18 and over), never your birth date. The player ID and device details are used only to keep the app working.

Notifications

A daily reminder is optional and is scheduled on your phone. We do not collect a push notification token. We only see whether notifications are allowed.

This website

playoctopuzzle.com uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read. Google sets cookies and receives your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view and the site that sent you. The app does not use Google Analytics.

Who else receives data

  • Apple: Sign in with Apple, and the App Store and TestFlight.
  • DigitalOcean: hosts our server and database.
  • Google: Google Analytics on this website only.

There are no ads, and we never sell or share your data with data brokers.

How long we keep it

Your account, devices and results are kept until you delete your account. Our server also keeps ordinary technical logs, such as errors and Sign in with Apple events, to run and fix the service.

Delete your data

In the app, open Settings and tap Delete account. It removes your account, device records and game results from our server, and revokes the Sign in with Apple connection if you have one. Data on your phone is removed when you delete the app. You can also email us and we will delete your account for you. If you used Sign in with Apple, you can also remove Octopuzzle from your Apple Account settings.

Withdrawing consent

You can turn off notifications in iOS Settings, stop using a name or username by deleting your account, and revoke Sign in with Apple from your Apple Account at any time.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
